I'm trying to resurect a Raleigh RM6 on an extreme (low)budget.I've got a complete engine with carb etc but no ignition coil. However,I have got a good coil from a  6volt Honda C100,could I use that? It has 2 low tension  wires, one black and one blue.Do I just earth one wire and connect the other to the engine mag(if so, which one goes to earth?)or do I stop being such a tight arse and spend £20 on the proper thing from Aplins?

Does the engine spark on a C100 with the battery disconnected if so yes the coil should work.
Normally on Honda the black wire is the ignition wire so I should connect that to the engine and earth the blue.
I'm not familiar with C100s so don't know if they use DC (Battery powered) or AC Ignition system, have you got a spare C50 or PC50 coil as that would work.
You shouldn't do any harm if you try the C100 coil so bung it on and let us know what happens !

first of all you need to identify how many wires are coming out of the magneto!...(if you haven't done this already)..the wire for the lighting circuit will have a steady resistance reading when you turn the flywheel, whereas the wire for the ignition will have a reading that goes off and on as the flywheel rotates (do it slowly) if you haven't got access to a test meter, you could use a small battery and a bulb wired between the frame and the wire you are checking...the on and off is the effect of the points opening and closing...this is the wire that goes to the coil...the only doubt at this point is if the coil is connected to the frame by its mounting bracket, but for the purposes of finding out, insulate the coil from the frame and connect one wire to the previously found points connection and the other coil connection to earth, and see if you get a spark when you spin the flywheel...it is assumed that you have established that the points are mechanically opening and closing, prior to ths experiment !   if you do get sparks, reverse the coli wires and try again..if you still get sparks, try attaching the coil to the frame and retesting, if you are again getting sparks, wahay!!  if not, reverse wires again and retest, often at this point a short prayer works wonders for the sole, alternatively, prepare to swear loud and long!!!  let us know how you get on!!  p.s  I am not familiar with this particular machine, ..is the electric system 6 or 12 volt? (I would expect 6)

Happy days....I've connected up the C100 coil, and it sparks whichever way round its wired, but I think it's slightly better with the black wire to earth and the blue one to the mag. I just need to mix up some oil and  petrol (whats the ideal ratio) and then I'm all set up to ruin the neighbours Sunday afternoon with that mighty two stroke roar.....and smell.

If the original coil was a white Novi, I've got a spare pre-owned one that you're welcome to if you want it to look right.

Thanks for your kind offer Nick, I've fitted the Honda C100 coil now (it makes a spark, but I hav'nt had the engine running yet) I may take you up on it in due course if I get problems, but it seems a pity to fit an original part to an old nail like mine.It would have made more sense to get a better, more complete machine, but where's the fun in that?  I have to admit though, that I may have gone a bit too far this time.

Good to hear you've got it sparking.  The offer's open if you want to take it up.  Brave man, sounds like you enjoy a challenge!

Happy days. The RM6 engine started straight away with the Honda coil and I've had a quick ride up and down the road/private test track officer. All seems well,so its just the lights to do and then the paperwork to get it registered.  The few people observing, seemed to find something hysterically funny--is this normal?

not only histerically funny, but kids try jumping out in front of you, because thay don't think it's real...I had one do this a few weeks ago when I was on Norman, and just as he did it, a policewoman walked round the corner I was approachin and saw him force me to swerve to miss him....before I could give the little swine a bollocking she had torn such a strip off him even I was (nearly) embarassed!

Hi Andy and Kermit - I've had similar reactions whilst giving the runabout its trial runs. Last Saturday with the bike running great I came to a T junction and three young teenage girls started howling with laughter - they were even more tickled when I croaked the horn. Without doubt the little mopeds are a real curiosity and eye catcher with many of people especially the younger kids but I also think that the shoei full face adds to the effect. safe riding. happyg.

Some guys have all the luck!  The Former Mrs Devonport wouldn't even sit on the Maxi I bought her when she whined that "We never do anything together" and you go and bag a complete stranger...

I was riding the Moby X7 through Dover a few years ago and three of the local sink comprehensive started hurling abuse.  One was heard to say " 'e looks like a f*****g paedophile on that!"  It made me so proud.

For the avoidance of doubt:
Should, in reponse to the photograph by Pottypantherman, any forum member be tempted to venture some course / blatant sexist remark along the lines of "I see your luck improved when you took the saddle off etc etc" they will be Baaaaad from the forum

Thanks for the Latin translation of my Forum signature, much better than the original!  I'm afraid I was deprived of a classical education, having only made the Languages stream of my alma mater, Harvey Grammar in Folkestone.  Ironically, Latin wasn't an option - the Arts stream studied that!

My Renee is a definite pulling machine...that purple turns heads everywhere I go on it, even when I have to apply the dreaded LPA, I am not sure if it is simple incredulity, though!

I am having similar problems with my RM6.

I have fully cleaned the carb and am satisfied it is now ok. It has a brand new plug.

This devil can be started with difficulty but is not happy to idle. However, most of the time, it just refuses to start!

I suspect its ignition is at fault. Cleaned the points and they open and close, but still refusing to come to life. Step by step (for someone with basic skills) how do I test each component (mag, condensor, HT lead, coil)?

I have a multimeter. I suspect this is something fairly simple but I am on my last legs now eliminating what it is!

Took this yesterday. Looks in pretty good order for a 45 yr old bike.
